They've still got a ways to go before equality, but Canada's banks have proven they are trying hard to appoint more females to their boards of directors, making these financial institutions among the most progressive in the country on this issue.

Two more women have been appointed this earnings season – Nora Aufreiter at Bank of Nova Scotia and Jacynthe Côté at Royal Bank of Canada. They follow the recent appointments of women such as Julie Payette at National Bank of Canada and Martine Turcottee at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

Ms. Aufreiter was previously a director at McKinsey & Co. and once ran the company's Toronto office.

Ms. Côté served as chief executive of Rio Tinto Alcan from 2009 to 2014.

Following the appointments, both Scotiabank and RBC have five female directors out of 15.
