The sign for National Bank Financial in Toronto.Charla Jones/The Globe and Mail

National Bank Financial has hired a new managing director in its diversified industries group.

Alex Smith joins the investment bank from London, where he worked at Morgan Stanley. Earlier in his career he worked in both Calgary and Vancouver.

Depending on the bank, the diversified industries group can range from aerospace to manufacturing. Over the past few years these sectors have been overshadowed by the likes of energy and mining, but that could change with metals prices in the dumps and could lead to more dealmaking.
