Canada captured the bronze medal at the 2011 FIBA Americas women's under-16 championship with a 53-36 victory over Puerto Rico.

Saturday's win means that Canada has secured its spot at the 2012 FIBA U17 women's world championship in the Netherlands.

"The girls were very prepared for the game tonight and really executed our game plan," said head coach Carly Clarke. "We had contributions from the whole group and our team defence was once again outstanding.

"We are extremely excited and proud to have qualified for the FIBA U17 World Championships and are excited to start preparing for next summer."

Toronto's Cheyanne Roger led Canada with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Hannah Jardine of St. John's, NL, grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, while Emma Wolfram of Kamloops, B.C., had eight points and seven boards.

"This was a major learning experience for everyone," said co-captain Kia Nurse of Hamilton, who led the team in tournament scoring. "It is an amazing opportunity to be able to see the world, compete on such a competitive stage and play the game we all love."

The U.S. beat Brazil 73-40 in the gold-medal game.

Canada led throughout the game and forced Puerto Rico into difficult shots, holding them to 21.7 per cent shooting from the field. Canada also out-rebounded Puerto Rico 61-48.

Early in the third quarter, Puerto Rico came within two points, but a 10-0 run, thanks to shot-making by Roger, Kolbie Orum of Maple Ridge, B.C., Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau of Gatineau, Que., and Anmol Mattu of Richmond, B.C., stretched the lead to double-digits.

Claudia Ortiz Ledesma led Puerto Rico with 10 points and five rebounds, while Gileysa Penzo Quinones chipped in with nine points.
