Canada dropped a 63-59 decision to Olympic silver medalist France on Tuesday at the women's world basketball championships.

Kim Gaucher of Mission, B.C., scored 10 points to lead the Canadians (1-2), who will move on to a qualifying round with the winners advancing to the quarter-finals.

Canada hung in with France, who lost to the U.S. in the gold-medal game of the 2012 London Games.

A basket by Edmonton's Michelle Plouffe tied the game 53-53 with just under five minutes to play but France (2-1) pulled away down the stretch for the victory.

Turkey defeated Mozambique 64-54 earlier in the day to go undefeated through the group stage and advance directly to the quarter-finals.

Second- and third-placed teams in each of the four groups will play in the qualifying round for the other four quarter-final berths.

The Canadian women are making their third consecutive world championship appearance.
