A look back at the 20 biggest moves Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke has made, in chronological order, in his two years in Toronto.
1. March 4, 2009: With the Leafs well out of a playoff spot and Vesa Toskala out for the season with an injury, Burke inexplicably claims goalie Martin Gerber off waivers from the Ottawa Senators at the trade deadline. Toronto went 9-9-0 to end the season with Gerber starting the majority of the games. One fewer win and the Leafs would have finished in a lottery position instead of seventh last.
2. March 4, 2009: Also at his first trade deadline, Burke dumps Nik Antropov and Dominic Moore to the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres, respectively, for two second-round picks.
3. April 3, 2009: With more than 20 teams interested in college free agent Tyler Bozak, Burke manages to sign the forward to a lucrative two-year entry level contract.
4. June 26, 2009: The Leafs draft Nazem Kadri seventh overall at Burke's first entry draft.
5. July 1, 2009: Looking to spend in free agency, Burke unloads defenceman Pavel Kubina in a salary dump to the Atlanta Thrashers, acquiring Garnet Exelby and Colin Stuart.
6. July 1, 2009: Burke makes two additions to start his first July 1, signing defenceman Mike Komisarek to a five-year contract at $4.5-million a season and enforcer Colton Orr to a four-year contract at $1-million a season.
7. July 2, 2009: Burke re-signs restricted free agent Mikhail Grabovski to a three-year contract at $2.9-million a season.
8. July 6, 2009: Leafs sign minor-leaguer Tim Brent to a one-year contract for near the league minimum.
9. July 6, 2009: Burke adds former Anaheim Ducks defenceman François Beauchemin, giving him a three-year contract for $3.8-million a season.
10. July 7, 2009: Swedish netminder Jonas Gustavsson signs a one-year contract, choosing Toronto over the San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars.
11. Sept. 18, 2009: Burke pulls off his most controversial deal to date, obtaining Phil Kessel from the Boston Bruins for the Leafs' 2010 first- and second-round picks and their 2011 first-round pick. He then gives Kessel a mammoth five-year deal for $5.4-million a season.
12. Jan. 31, 2010: With his team in dead last in the Eastern Conference after 56 games, Burke pulls off two more big deals, the first of which sent underperforming and overpriced players Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake to the Ducks for netminder Jean-Sébastien Giguère.
13. Jan. 31, 2010: Deal No. 2 involves Burke acquiring Dion Phaneuf, Fredrik Sjostrom and Keith Aulie from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and Ian White.
14. March 2, 2010: The Leafs add winger Luca Caputi and defenceman Martin Skoula from the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward Alexei Ponikarovsky the day before the trade deadline. Skoula is then dealt to the New Jersey Devils for a fifth-round pick.
15. March 3, 2010: The Leafs acquire Matt Jones, a fifth-round draft pick and a seventh-round draft pick from the Phoenix Coyotes for Lee Stempniak, who has scored 21 goals in 40 regular-season games since.
16. June 26, 2010: Burke adds Mike Brown from Anaheim for a fifth-round pick.
17. June 30, 2010: The Leafs acquire Kris Versteeg from the Chicago Blackhawks for Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico and Philippe Paradis.
18. July 1, 2010: In his second go at free agency, Burke signs just winger Colby Armstrong on the first day, giving him a three-year deal for $3-million a season.
