The Montreal Canadiens agreed to a six-year, $33-million deal with defenceman Jeff Petry on Tuesday.

Petry, who was set to be an unrestricted free agent, was stellar late in the regular season and playoffs for Montreal after GM Marc Bergevin acquired him from the Edmonton Oilers at the trade deadline.

The 27-year-old is locked up through the 2020-21 season.

Petry had three goals and four assists in 19 regular-season games for the Canadiens. He added two goals and an assist in the post-season.

The Canadiens traded a second-round pick and one that turned into a fourth-rounder for Petry.
