The most ubiquitous presence on Toronto airwaves now and for the next several months will be unemployed NHL general managers.

You will not be able to turn on a radio without hearing one of them modestly extol his many gifts when it comes to a shot at operating the Toronto Maple Leafs. Doug Armstrong, fired by the Dallas Stars a while back, was the latest, turning up on The Fan 590's Hockey Central to chat with hosts Daren Millard and Nick Kypreos.

Doug MacLean, slipped the Queen of Spades last season by the Columbus Blue Jackets, has already made the rounds and no doubt will be back. Even the guys who already have jobs, like Jim Rutherford of the Carolina Hurricanes, have already been on a show or two to protest they like it just fine where they are.

As any sports writer will tell you, there is no one friendlier than a GM or coach who is looking for work. But once a job comes along, a lot of them suddenly lose your phone number.

Given the traffic expected for this job, maybe someone could set up a web site for candidates to sell themselves. It could save the Leafs search committee, Richard Peddie and Gord Kirke, a lot of trouble.
