Buyers or sellers?
General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff isn't exactly known for his transaction fireworks, so it's difficult to see him suddenly deviating from his slow and steady build to pull off a blockbuster on deadline day. Expect minor tweaking at best.
Needs
Depth on defence and the wings. A top-six forward who can play on the left side would be particularly appealing.
On the block
There has been a lot of talk that the Red Wings or Flyers could take a run at landing Dustin Byfuglien. Veteran defenceman Mark Stuart has been rumoured to be available and is an expiring contract. Forwards Devin Setoguchi and Olli Jokinen are in the same boat and could end up as rentals.
X-factor
Expectations. The Jets are just two points out of a playoff spot as of Tuesday morning, but have run hot and cold all season long. There are also a pile of teams (the Kings, Stars, Canucks, Coyotes and Wild) jostling for playoff position in the tough Western Conference. Does it make sense to spend a bit of the future to make the postseason, or will management sit tight and hope the gains made under new head coach Paul Maurice will be enough to keep the team playing into the spring?
