Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Nick Boynton was suspended for one game Friday for making a throat slashing gesture in an NHL pre-season game.

Boynton made the gesture towards Lightning forward Blair Jones midway through the second period of Tampa Bay's 4-2 victory Wednesday night.

Boynton will miss Chicago's regular season opener at Colorado on Oct. 7.

He will forfeit $2,688.17 in salary.

The 31-year-old Nobleton, Ont., native recorded eight points (1-7) and 71 penalty minutes in 49 games last season. He did not record a point in three playoff games.
