A Quebec junior hockey player found guilty of assault with a weapon after cross-checking an opponent in the face last fall will be sentenced Dec. 14.

The judge who convicted the youth today says he does not believe the actions were accidental.

Youth court Judge Jacques A. Nadeau also says it's clear the law extends to hockey arenas and that players need to understand this.

The accused, who was 17 at the time, was facing one count of assault causing bodily harm and a second charge of assault with a weapon.

Nadeau called the attack unprovoked, unfair, excessive and dangerous.

The Crown is asking for probation and a $1,000 fine, while the defence wants the accused to get only a reprimand.
