The National Hockey League suspended Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan for three games on Wednesday for elbowing Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn.

Doan, who received a three-game suspension in October 2010, is classified as a repeat offender under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players Association. He will forfeit US$166,463.40 in salary.

Doan's hit on Benn came at the 5:54 of the second period in the Coyotes' 4-3 shootout loss to Dallas on Tuesday. Doan was assessed a minor penalty for elbowing on the play.

The suspension comes less than a week after Doan was fined $2,500 by the NHL for boarding Calgary Flames defenceman Mark Giordano during a game.
