Liam Middleton is out as coach of the Canadian men's rugby sevens team.

In the wake of a review of the men's sevens program, Rugby Canada says it will not renew Middleton's contract.

The Zimbabwe native has been head coach since September 2014.

It has been a tough season for the men's sevens squad. It finished 13th overall on the World Series and failed to qualify for the Olympics at a last-chance repechage qualifier in Monaco last month.

Rugby Canada says it will start a global search for a new head coach immediately.
