Three gold medals on Friday helped Canada win the four-country Nations Cup swimming event.

Jen Beckberger of Ajax, Ont., Brittany MacLean of Toronto, Caroline Murray of Quebec City and Seanna Mitchell of Calgary set a national record in the women's 4x50 freestyle relay with a time of one minute 43.21 seconds as Canada topped Australia, Brazil and France in the overall standings.

The previous Canadian mark was 1:43.76 set by 2008 Nations Cup team that also included Mitchell.

"It felt great to get the record," said Mitchell. "We were so pumped for this meet and this relay. We had a chance to practise together this week and we knew we had a chance for the record. We just went for it."

Canada's other gold medallists Friday were Jeremy Bagshaw of Victoria in the men's 200-metre freestyle and Haylee Johnson of Vancouver in the women's 200-metre breaststroke.

The Canadian team was second after the first day of competition and trailed the top spot by 11 points with only eight events left Friday. Canada wound up with 339 points, while Australia was second at 329, Brazil third at 253 and France fourth at 199.

"The kids came back with an outstanding effort to wrap it up before the final two relays," said Canada head coach Lance Cansdale. "This meet showed the quality of depth that we are starting to produce. We were the youngest team here and that youth and emotion really came through for us."

Bragshaw was the only Canadian male to win gold at the event.

"I'm really pleased with that result," said Bragshaw, who finished in 1:50.62. "It's the fastest I've gone all year so the work is paying off.

"I'm learning a lot and this will definitely help with making the Olympic team in two years."

Johnson, meanwhile, bounced back after a sub-par showing at the summer nationals last month.

"After a disappointing nationals I really wanted to break the 2:30 barrier today," said Johnson, who clocked 2:29.81. "I think I was more confident and relaxed."
