Battlefield 3 has sold five million units in its first week globally, making it the fastest-selling video game in Electronic Arts' history.

The first-person shooter, released Oct. 25, drew pre-sales of close to three million.

"From Tokyo to Los Angeles, Sydney to London, millions of fans have been playing all weekend long — we are overwhelmed by the global response to Battlefield 3," Patrick Soderlund, executive vice-president of the EA Games Label, said in a statement Monday.

Developed by DICE in Stockholm, the franchise has sold 50 million units since the release of Battlefield 1942 in 2002. The developer has released 17 games and expansion packs in the Battlefield series.

Battlefield 3 got the jump on rival Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 which is due for release Nov. 8.

EA reports that Battlefield 3 gamers have already executed 73 million kills, 48 million reviews and destroyed 67 million vehicles.

The Battlefield beta, available in September, set online play records for EA with 42 billion shots fired and 1.6 billion kills registered.
