CBC's coverage of the federal Conservative leadership convention and the awarding of the 2010 Olympics will compete against CTV's coverage of Ontario's power blackout, Global National's reports on the Kelowna, B.C., fires, and Toronto 1's stories about the Cecilia Zhang tragedy at this year's Gemini Awards.

All five were named in the category of best news special-event coverage as Gemini nominations were announced yesterday in the categories of news, documentaries and sports, with those awards to be handed out Dec. 11. The remaining nominations will be announced next Tuesday.

In the category of best sports program or series: Spruce Meadows Television was nominated for the 2003 World Cup Finals: Spruce Meadows Horse Diaries; CBC got a nod for Hockey Day in Canada; DRT Media Productions Inc., Rogers Sportsnet was recognized for Roger Neilson: A Tribute; TSN was nominated for NHL on TSN Pre-Game; and Omni Film Productions Ltd. in association with CBC was cited for Wrestling With Destiny: The Life & Times of Daniel Igali.

National news anchors Kevin Newman of Global, Peter Mansbridge of CBC and Lloyd Robertson of CTV will duke it out in the category of best news anchor.

Other nominees include former Globe and Mail TV critic John Haslett Cuff, nominated for best documentary writing for Crimes of the Heart, his TVOntario essay on adultery.
