Ron Sexsmith opens for the legendary troubadour John Prine in a pair of shows next month.

Anybody who has paid attention to Ron Sexsmith's songwriting over his stellar career knows that the man can string a few words together. So it should come as no surprise that the Toronto singer-songwriter has a written a novel, Deer Life, which is due out in late 2017 through Dundurn Press. The Juno winner, who opens for the legendary troubadour John Prine in a pair of local shows next month, let us in on what else has been keeping him occupied these days.

What he's watching: "I've been really getting into The Night Of, on HBO. It's very gripping and extremely well acted, but mainly it's because I'm a huge fan of John Turturro and will watch him in pretty much anything. I also love Stranger Things, a spooky sci-fi series on Netflix."

What he's listening to: "Lately it's case/lang/veirs, the new album by Neko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs. I'm a big fan of all three and so I was pretty excited to hear that they had collaborated on a project. I certainly did not see that coming! My favourites so far are Atomic Number and Song For Judee, which was written for the late, great Judee Sill (who is another one of my favourites)."

What he is reading: "I recently finished Wigford Rememberies by Kyp Harness. It's one of the best books I've read in ages. And that it was written by one of my favourite songwriters is an added bonus."

Ron Sexsmith opens for John Prine, Sept. 9, 8 p.m. $69.50 to $99.50. Massey Hall, masseyhall.com; Sept. 10, 8 p.m. $62.75 to $96.75. Hamilton Place Theatre, Hamilton, ticketmaster.ca.
