deals of the week

Highly anticipated, all-new 2017 models such as the Volvo S90 and Genesis G90 have been recent darlings of the automotive industry, and showcase how a number of auto makers – including Volvo and Hyundai – have been hard at work to revamp their product offerings and vehicle lineups.

Naturally, the repositioning of a brand and introduction of new models means that vehicles which have either reached the end of their product cycle or no longer fit into the company's strategy will not be making it onto production lines for the following year. The typical new vehicle design will last between four to six years with likely a facelift in between. These are 12 current models that will not be produced in the 2017 model year in Canada:

  1. BMW M5
  2. Buick Verano
  3. Cadillac ELR
  4. Chrysler 200
  5. Dodge Dart
  6. Honda CR-Z
  7. Hyundai Genesis Coupe
  8. Lincoln MKS
  9. Scion tC
  10. Mini Paceman
  11. Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid
  12. Volvo XC70

The upside of buying a soon-to-be discontinued car, however, is that auto makers are willing to offer big savings on these vehicles to make room for new inventory. Here are our favourite deals this week on outgoing models.

Volvo

2016 Volvo XC70

While the XC70 has been a member of the Volvo lineup since 1997, the brand currently offers two other models within the station-wagon segment, the V60 and V60 Cross Country, and is making room for a third, the upcoming V90, which will be a part of the brand’s revitalization. While Volvo has decided it will be parting ways with the XC70 after a 19-year run, sizable discounts are available to consumers willing to purchase remaining 2016 models. Cash purchasers can take advantage of a $5,500 manufacturer incentive on the 2016 XC70 (as compared with $4,500 in August). Financing for up to 72 months is available at zero per cent while leasing for 48 months is available at 3.9 per cent.

Hyundai

The Genesis lineup will no longer be sold under the Hyundai nameplate in 2017, with the Korean auto maker launching Genesis as a stand-alone luxury brand next year. The new Genesis lineup will initially include G80 and G90 sedans. While the existing sports coupe will not be making the transition to the Genesis brand in 2017, cash purchase, finance and lease customers can take advantage of a $1,000 manufacturer incentive on the 2016 Genesis Coupe. Financing for up to 72 months is available at zero per cent while leasing for up to 60 months is available at 3.99 per cent.

Toyota

2016 Scion tC

While 2016 will mark the final year of production for Scion vehicles, a number of models including the Scion iM and FR-S will be rebadged and sold under the Toyota nameplate. The tC, however, is not on that short list and will not make it back for the 2017 model year. Cash purchase and finance customers interested in an outgoing model can take advantage of a $1,500 after-tax manufacturer incentive on the 2016 tC, while lease customers are eligible for a $2,000 rebate (as compared with $1,500 in July). Financing for up to 60 months is available at zero per cent (as compared with 0.49 per cent in July) and leasing for up to 60 months is available at zero per cent (as compared with 1.49 per cent for 60 months in July).

That said, consumers willing to opt for an outgoing MKS can take advantage of a $2,530 Lincoln Employee Pricing rebate on cash, finance and lease transactions.
