The wide-leg sailor-style pant has emerged as a fresh piece for men.

This spring, like many others, nautical inspiration is as far-reaching as the seas. While stripes abound for both sexes, the wide-leg sailor-style pant has emerged as a fresh piece for men. For the office, the look to channel is more shore leave than raver. Here's how to make it shipshape.

1. Leave those stiff cotton trousers to the navy boys of the 1930s. Today's wide-leg fabrications are more fluid, so look for soft, lightweight wools ideal for a modern workplace (instead of, say, a boat).

2. The wide cut can make you appear wider, so be careful. When paired with a sharply tailored jacket, as at Rag & Bone (above left), the bulk is toned down considerably. From there, it's smooth sailing all the way.

3. Keep the rest of the look loose and drapey, much like the pants themselves. Adding one casual element, such as a scarf or soft knit, still leaves you looking polished.
