It's Tuesday, one of the cheapest days to book a holiday and fly, says North Vancouver, B.C.-based travel consultant Julie Walsh.

"Prices rise as demand rises. Generally, business travel is Monday, Thursday and Friday and vacationers travel Saturday and Sunday. There's not much demand midweek."

Booking a flight today or tomorrow will be cheaper than other days of the week, but flying out midweek will save even more, provided you're open to jetting off on a weekday rather than a weekend.

September also happens to be the best month for booking travel to hot spots. Excellent fares are available from the middle of the month until the first week of December. The only catch: A low price tag usually comes with a higher risk the weather upon arrival may be less than ideal.

Other money-wise travel tips: Accommodations in city centres are always more costly, says Ms. Walsh. If your destination has efficient and inexpensive transportation systems, considering bunking in a smaller neighbouring town.

If you're booking online and want to one-stop comparison shop, visit http://www.airfarewatchdog.com. After plugging in your destination and dates this site will pull up some of the most popular travel discount sites so you can compare away. You'll also get an e-mail alert when prices drop if you're not ready to book right away.

If you're the type who favours deal over destination check out http://www.skyauction.com. This website negotiates packages with restaurants, hotels, airlines, etc., and auctions them off to the highest bidder - kind of like eBay for travel.
