Russia: How to treat tourists

Stop bothering female tourists, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told a group of youths during a visit to the North Caucasus. "If tourists come here and locals grope or pinch the women, perhaps some might like it, but many won't," Mr. Putin said. "And the number of people interested in coming here will fall." Mountain people in the region are proud and think tourism jobs are menial, he said. To turn tourism into an important industry, he advised, they should start thinking of it as real work.

India: Watch out for tipsy pilots

At least 67 commercial airline pilots in India showed up for work tipsy over a recent 30-month period. They were caught out in preflight medical checks and alcohol breath tests. Once sporadic, the tests were made mandatory last November. Jetstar Airways pilots led the infamy list with 20 pilots testing positive. Next came pilots from Kingfisher Airlines and IndiGo with 10 each and JetLite with nine. First-time offenders receive a three-month licence suspension. A further infraction brings a five-year suspension.

North Korea: Please come visit!

The reclusive government of North Korea is striving to attract more foreign tourists in an apparent bid to earn hard currency. It recently signed a deal with New York-based Korea Pyongyang Trading USA for tours to Mount Kumgang , a scenic mountain resort. And this week it will launch a tourism program for Malaysians by opening air service to Kuala Lumpur. This comes only weeks after the start of flights linking North Korea's capital, Pyongyang, with Shanghai and Xian in China.
