Saskatchewan Finance Minister Rod Gantefoer says the time is right for him to move on to something else.

Mr. Gantefoer, who announced in February that he has Parkinson's disease, says he won't run in the 2011 provincial election.

The 63-year-old was first elected in Melfort in 1995 and was a founding member of the Saskatchewan Party.

He has served as Saskatchewan's finance minister since the Saskatchewan Party won the 2007 provincial election.

Premier Brad Wall says Mr. Gantefoer's steady approach served the province well during a time when revenues were anything but steady.

Mr. Gantefoer says he made the announcement now to give the premier time to make cabinet changes, which are expected to happen before the end of the month.
