Toronto transit officials say a liquid that leaked onto the tracks at a downtown subway station wasn't gas or diesel fuel and is believed to be some kind of lubricant or oil.

The leak forced the Toronto Transit Commission to shut down a busy portion of the main subway line between Bloor and Union stations during Tuesday's morning rush and caused a nightmare for commuters.

TTC spokesman Brad Ross says more testing needs to be done but the substance is likely transformer oil, hydraulic fluid or lubricating oil.

Ross says there were no reports of spills within one kilometre of College station in the previous two days.

He says the liquid could have picked up any number of contaminants as it travelled through the soil.

The transit commission says it will continue to monitor the site of the leak to try to pinpoint its source, while working with city officials and Ontario's Environment Ministry.
