Borden Ladner Gervais LLP has hired well-known competition lawyer Davit Akman away from Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP.
Mr. Akman has advised companies on a variety of competition matters, including cartel investigations and national and cross-border class actions, and has appeared before the Competition Tribunal and the Supreme Court of Canada. He joined Gowlings in 2012 after leaving Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP.
He will know at least one person in the BLG cafeteria: Mr. Akman was a clerk for then Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour in 1999-2000, and Ms. Arbour joined BLG as counsel in 2014.
In 2012, his hiring was touted by Gowlings, which was then on a shopping spree for top lateral talent. His CV includes work on a landmark commercial-law case involving BCE Inc. and appearing as counsel for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce on the Sun-Rype v. Archer Daniels Midland price-fixing case, which the Supreme Court ruled on in 2013.
BLG's national managing partner and chief executive officer, Sean Weir, said in a press release that Mr. Akman was a strong addition to the firm: "His thought leadership and cutting-edge knowledge will provide effective and comprehensive advice to our clients on some of their most critical matters."
