A couple of mechanical mishaps cost Canada's Catharine Pendrel the overall mountain bike World Cup series lead Sunday.

The Canadian champion from Kamloops, B.C., finished 16th, seven minutes 49 seconds behind winner Nathalie Schneitter of Switzerland. Schneitter finished the 24.7-kilometre race in 1:45.40 seconds, with Eva Lechner of Italy finishing second, 2:13 seconds behind, and American Willow Koerber crossing third, 2:29 seconds.

Marie-Helene Premont of Chateau Richer, Que., was the top Canadian in 13th place.

Pendrel battled drivetrain problems early in the race and then suffered a flat tire late in the competition, falling to third in the World Cup standings with 594 points. Lechner has 655 while Koerber has 640. With two races remaining, any of the top three could still take the title.

"The interruptions and running were tough mentally, but these things happen, particularly in ugly course conditions," Pendrel said on her mechanical troubles. "It was not the best day, not the worst. I think I have good legs and look forward to challenging for the podium next weekend."

Emily Batty of Brooklin, Ont., finished 23rd overall and third in the under-23 age category, moving up to third overall in the under-23 standings.

Geoff Kabush of Courtenay, B.C., was the top Canadian in the men's 29-kilometre race finishing 21st.

Florian Vogel of Switzerland won the men's gold, while Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic was second and world champion Nino Schurter of Switzerland, took third.

Julien Absalon of France continues to lead the men's World Cup rankings with 710 points, followed by Schurter at 686 points. Kabush moved up from 22nd to 18th overall with 228 points.
