Volkswagen Canada says it is recalling about 37,000 vehicles due to a potential problem with the windshield wiper fluid tank that could lead to a fire.

The recall affects 2007 to 2009 model year Golf, Jetta, Jetta Sportwagen, Rabbit and 2006 to 2010 Beetle and Beetle convertibles.

A spokesman for the company says a plastic tab on the bottom of the windshield wiper fluid tank can chafe against a fuel line, potentially causing a hole that could led to a fire.

The spokesman said there are no known incidents in which a fire has actually occurred.

Volkswagen says a mechanic can simply snip off the part that causes the problem.

The company will mail letters to car owners in January, but drivers can call their dealership if they have questions before receiving the letter.

The recall in Canada is part of a broader Volkswagen recall for the potential leak that affects more than 228,000 vehicles.

Meanwhile, Chrysler is recalling more than 367,000 Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans in the U.S. because of problems with air bags.

It's not yet clear whether Canadian models are affected.
