How to pull off: Paisley prints

A men's-wear mainstay when it comes to scarves and neckties, paisley patterns are branching out this season beyond their traditional parameters - and bohemian/effete connotations. But be forewarned, gentlemen: The flashy pattern, when worn prominently, requires a confident air. Here's how to flaunt it successfully - yes, at work, too.

1) Be bold, opting for an all-over paisley dress shirt - as at Etro's spring presentation - instead of one merely trimmed with it. Unless you work on a yacht, moreover, button it all the way up.

2) To temper the print's vaguely hippie leanings, pair it with a sharp suit, not patchouli. Make sure it's in a classic grey or navy, as black will look too stark and serious alongside such a fun print.

3) While loafers are the perfect partner for this look, wear them only on casual days and paired with cotton or linen suits. For the rest of the week, sharp patent or shiny black leather nicely ties the print to wool suiting.
