Decision on Auditor-General’s future put off until at least Tuesday

The B.C. Legislature committee meeting to decide whether to rehire Auditor-General John Doyle has put off its decision to next Tuesday.

The delay was announced Friday by commiittee deputy chair Kathy Corrigan at the end of an in-camera meeting.

"There is no decision as of yet. We are going to continue on Tuesday," said Ms. Corrigan, an NDP MLA.

"I contemplate we will be finished on Tuesday. There's no guarantees."

The deliberations come after Premier Christy Clark called for a two-year extension in Mr. Doyle's term, and legislative reforms to limit the auditor-general to a single eight-year term.

Members of the Liberal-dominated committee ruled out another term for Mr. Doyle, prompting critics to suggest the Liberals were targeting a tough critic of government spending.

In response, Ms. Clark said the selection process in general was "profoundly flawed" and she did not want it to appear politics was interfering with the process so close to an election.

Ms. Corrigan, who supports an extension for Mr. Doyle, said there was nothing she could say about what happened at the in-camera meeting.

Asked if she was frustrated with delays, Ms. Corrigan said: "It is what it is. There are things that need to be done and worked on. I don't want to rush things."
