Woman dead after her scarf gets caught in Montreal escalator

A 47-year-old woman is dead after her scarf got caught in an escalator, according to Montreal police.

The woman was riding the escalator downward into the Fabre stop in the northeast end of the Montreal metro system, according to Jean-Pierre Brabant, a police spokesman. "She bent over to try to get free and her hair got caught as well," he said.

A passing transit user saw the woman at the bottom of the escalator and called emergency services using the metro's 911 system. The woman was dead by the time emergency responders arrived, according to Mr. Brabant.

The case is being led by the Quebec coroner's office, with help from the police force. Investigators have obtained video recordings as they try to sort out exactly what happened, Mr. Brabant said.
