Big Freedia brings bounce to Lee’s Palace

"Living here in New Orleans, you have to have some sort of hustle to survive." So explains Big Freedia, the Louisiana-based star of a sub-genre of dance music known as "bounce music." With Big Freedia popping into town for a show at Lee's Palace on Tuesday, a primer on the performer and the rump-a-licious brand of hip hop is in order.

- Big Freedia (pronounced "FREE-da") is genetically a man, but self-identifies as the "one and only, queen diva, Big Freedia, you're best to believe her." The boast is incontestable.

- Bounce music is a form of call-and-response rap music originating from New Orleans block parties. It is uptempo and never solemn, with an energy so intense as to trigger a highly sexualized dance, usually by women – sometimes lines of them.

- Bounce dancing involves the vigorous and vertical shaking of the buttocks, which explains the genre's biggest hits: Back That Azz Up and Big Freedia's Azz Everywhere.

- There is expected to be Azz Everywhere at Lee's Palace on Tuesday evening.
