Don't be taking off those snow tires just yet. Freezing rain, ice pellets and possibly a sprinkling of snow are forecast for the Toronto area over the next couple of days.

Environment Canada has issued a storm warning for Thursday, predicting that motorists across Toronto and the Hamilton, Peel, Halton, Durham and York regions should expect unfriendly driving conditions until at least Friday.

In and around Barrie and neighbouring cottage country, the anticipated 80 mm of rain and freezing rain may turn to snow, and power outages are also possible, the agency says on its Web site.

As to why winter-like conditions are persisting in mid-April, blame a low-pressure weather system from the southwest that is butting up against a cold air mass from the north, Environment Canada says.
