Police expect case of missing Whitby jogger to be solved soon

Police expect to soon learn what happened to a Whitby, Ont., teacher who mysteriously disappeared during an early-morning run in January.

Investigators believe that a body found partly encased in ice on the shore of Lake Ontario by a man walking his dog in Whitby on Saturday is that of Jeffrey Boucher.

A postmortem examination is scheduled for Monday, but police say they do not suspect foul play.

"We're going to wait for the results of the autopsy to see if the coroner can shed some more light on cause of death," Durham Regional Police spokesman Dave Selby said.

Mr. Boucher, a 52-year-old married father of two, went missing on Jan. 13 after he is believed to have gone for a predawn jog.

Large teams of police and civilians searched for Mr. Boucher, but found no trace of him. His wallet and other personal belongings were found at his home.

Despite an early suggestion by police that it was possible that Mr. Boucher chose to disappear, his wife, Kirsten, maintained that her husband must have had an accident during his run.

The body was discovered on Saturday just hours after one of Mr. Boucher's running shoes was found on the Lake Ontario shoreline. His other shoe was found three weeks ago by a woman walking along the water.
