This is a ranking of compensation paid in fiscal 2008 to the CEOs of the 100 largest companies (by market capitalization) in the S&P/TSX composite index as of June 1. For companies with no CEO, the president or similar executive is used. Where two names appear, the company has co-CEOs. The data reflect new compensation disclosure rules mandated by regulators for companies with fiscal year-ends of Dec. 31, 2008 or later. For companies with earlier fiscal year-ends, the data in some categories may not be directly comparable if displayed under prior disclosure rules.
The chart also shows CEOs' accumulated equity and pension holdings at the end of their companies' fiscal years or at a later date if provided by the company in the annual shareholder proxy circular. It does not include gains from options that have been exercised in the past or shares that were sold in the past, but only provides a snapshot of current holdings at a moment in time. The data do not include shares held by a CEO in other related companies within their corporate groups.

- CURRENCY: For companies that report in U.S. dollars, amounts are converted to Canadian dollars at the average annual exchange rate for 2008 ($1.066 Cdn).
- SALARY is base salary.
- BONUS is annual cash incentive payment.
- PERCENTAGE CHANGE is the change from 2007 total salary and bonus. No number is shown if the CEO was not in the same position for all of 2007 and 2008.
- OTHER includes all other payments and the cash value of other benefits.
- STOCK AWARDS is the total of shares, share units, trust units or similar long-term incentive plan grants.
- OPTION GRANTS is the value of stock options or trust unit rights granted in 2008.
- PENSION VALUE is the annual value of pension benefit earned by the CEO in 2008.
- VALUE OF UNEXERCISED IN-THE-MONEY OPTIONS is the value of stock options held by the CEO at the end of the fiscal year.
- VALUE OF UNVESTED SHARE-BASED AWARDS is the value of share units or related compensation that have not yet met time or performance conditions required for payout.
- VALUE OF SHARES AND SHARE UNITS is the value of equity held by the CEO.
- COMPANIES' ACCRUED OBLIGATION FOR PENSION is the estimated value of companies' total cost to provide the CEO's pension.
