GE invests $100-million in Ontario

GE Canada says it will spend up to $100-million over the next five years to upgrade design, production and process capabilities at its Peterborough, Ont.-based industrial motor factory.

The Canadian unit of global conglomerate General Electric says it needs to make the upgrades to stay competitive, and adds that the upgrade is expected to create about 100 jobs.

Ontario's provincial government is investing $15-million in the refurbishment.

The plant makes large custom motors used in industrial processes such as gas compression, ore grinding, water pumping and power generation. Most are exported to Asia and the Middle East.

The Peterborough factory currently employs about 700 people.
