Freddy Adu is returning to Major League Soccer, and he will join the Philadelphia Union, FoxSports.com reported Thursday, citing sources within the MLS.

Previously, there were hints that Adu would join Chivas USA, but instead FoxSports.com reported that the Union will announced Friday that he had signed with the Philadelphia team. He will join the team as a designated player.

The addition of Adu would reunite him with Union head coach Peter Nowak, who was head coach of D.C. United during Adu's early years in MLS when he played in D.C.

Chivas USA had been hoping to obtain Adu, 22, but apparently ownership became hestiant at the last moment. That opened the door for the Union, which is in a close competition with the Columbus Crew for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Adu and Nowak had disagreements at times when they were with the D.C. squad, but they worked together on the 2008 US Olympic Team.
