Montreal’s police chief says he’s retiring nearly two years ahead of the end of his five-year mandate.
Sylvain Caron announced today he’s leaving the post in April for personal reasons after more than 40 years in policing.
Caron was named to head the Montreal force in 2018, and his term was set to expire at the end of 2023, but Caron says he told the city’s general manager last December he was ready to retire.
Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante joined Caron for the announcement, paying tribute to Caron’s time at the helm of the force.
The process to find Caron’s replacement will begin in the coming weeks.
An interim police chief will be named ahead of Caron’s departure.
