Ontario’s police watchdog says a man from Toronto has died after allegedly being shot by an officer during a wellness check.

The Special Investigations Unit says Toronto police were called to a midtown condo building on Saturday night after receiving reports of a man in distress.

It alleges the 28-year-old man met officers in a hallway while brandishing a knife and stabbed one of them, prompting police to fire conducted energy weapons at him.

When that had no effect, the SIU alleges one of the officers fired a shot at the man.

He was taken to hospital, where he was eventually pronounced dead.

All police on the scene, including the injured officer, were also taken to hospital, but there was no immediate word on their conditions.
