New Audi e-tron Quattro is presented during the media day at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Sept. 15, 2015.KAI PFAFFENBACH/Reuters

What is it?

The Audi e-tron quattro concept, an all-electric SUV with mid-size dimensions and full-size ambitions.

Signature feature

The powertrain, which boasts (boosts?) no fewer than three electric motors, one at the front, two at the back. Charging into second place: the riveting exterior design, with its cooling louvers and moveable aerodynamic devices.

What else is new?

This concept also features what is described as the largest solar panel sunroof in the sector, a 1980-mm long collection of cells that can provide an additional 1,000 kilometres of range per year. A combined AC/DC quick-charging system aims to replenish the 95-kWh lithium ion battery pack in around 30 minutes. This pack will be modular in design, so it could be used for other future Audi EVs.

Under the hood

The triumvirate of motors combines to create more than 400 horsepower under normal driving conditions and close to 500 when in overboost mode. The 590 lb-ft of torque should be sufficient to propel the Audi to 100 km/h in fewer than five seconds. In an y un-Germanic move, top speed will be limited to 210 km/h to preserve battery life. Estimated range: around 500 kilometres. Estimated range anxiety: close to zero.

When can we buy it, and for how much?

This concept foreshadows an eventual electrified version of what will be called the Audi Q6. Insiders at Audi have hinted at a production model release time-frame of early 2018. Understandably, pricing is still to be determined.
