Printing and publishing giant Transcontinental said Tuesday that it has acquired Montreal-based Lipso Systems Inc., a developer and marketer of technology that facilitates communications and transactions between organizations and mobile users.

Lipso bills itself as Canada's leading company in the field and the only technology provider to play the triple role of system integrator, provider of mobile transaction connectivity/management and developer of mobile applications.

Terms of the deal for Lipso, whose more than two dozen employees will be integrated into Transcontinental's marketing communications sector, were not disclosed.

The sector provides marketing services and products using communications platforms supported by database analytics, pre-media, e-flyers, e-mail marketing and custom communications.

"Every day we work with our clients on the analysis, execution and deployment of their marketing strategies based on one-to-one marketing and new communication platforms," the sector's president, Christian Trudeau, said in a news release.

"The Lipso acquisition fits right in with this approach and makes it possible for us to create a unique centre of excellence for mobile marketing solutions. It also confirms our leading position in the delivery of marketing communications solutions."

Transcontinental, with some 11,000 employees, reported $2.4-billion in revenue in 2009 and is the largest printer in Canada and Mexico, and the fourth-largest in North America. It is also Canada's leading publisher of consumer magazines and French-language educational resources and the second-largest community newspaper publisher. Its digital platform delivers content through more than 120 websites.
