StockStory - Thu Apr 4, 3:46AM CDT

As Q4 earnings season comes to a close, it’s time to take stock of this quarter's best and worst performers amongst the casino operator stocks, including MGM Resorts (NYSE:MGM) and its peers.

Casino operators enjoy limited competition because gambling is a highly regulated industry. These companies can also enjoy healthy margins and profits. Have you ever heard the phrase ‘the house always wins’? Regulation cuts both ways, however, and casinos may face stroke-of-the-pen risk that suddenly limits what they can or can't do and where they can do it. Whether it’s online poker or sports betting on your smartphone, innovation is forcing these players to adapt to changing consumer preferences, such as being able to wager anywhere on demand.

The 8 casino operator stocks we track reported a weaker Q4; on average, revenues beat analyst consensus estimates by 1.1% Valuation multiples for growth stocks have reverted to their historical means after reaching highs in early 2021, but casino operator stocks held their ground better than others, with the share prices up 4.2% on average since the previous earnings results.
