RCMP in Burnaby, B.C., have shot and killed a man while responding to a call about a person with a knife.

The Independent Investigations Office, which probes police incidents involving death or serious harm, says the shooting occurred early Thursday morning.

A release from the office says seven independent investigators are now at the scene trying to determine what happened.

The release says RCMP officers were answering a 911 call about a man with a knife, and were about one block from the scene, when they spotted a man who met the description of the suspect.

How that meeting escalated to a fatal shooting is still under investigation.

Police have blocked off Hastings Street and have used a plastic sheet to cover what appears to be a knife, lying in the middle of the busy commuter route.
