A man denied membership in a women's-only gym has filed a complaint with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission.

The man says in his complaint he tried to join Body Options Ladies Fitness Centre in Winnipeg last November because his wife belonged and it was close to his home.

But Body Options owner Helen Bagg says there are dozens of other places the man could join without jeopardizing the desire of women to work out in the comfort of a single-sex environment.

Ms. Bagg says she started her business in 1986 after a feasibility study showed women preferred to exercise without men.

She says coed facilities tend to be male-dominated and the equipment is not female-friendly, while female-only gyms are "less intimidating and emotionally more comfortable."

Ms. Bagg says the commission asked her to conduct a survey to determine how her clients feel about the issue.
