The provincially mandated regulator of the Ontario home-building industry has set up an ombudsman's office to tackle buyer complaints.

Tarion Warranty Corp. said this week that it has appointed Ian Darling as its new home buyer ombudsman.

The creation of the ombudsman position and Mr. Darling's appointment follows a series of media interviews in which

Tarion president and chief

executive officer Howard Bogach acknowledged that disgruntled customers needed an avenue for registering complaints against the regulator, especially with regards to the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act.

Mr. Darling comes to Tarion from Fanshawe College in London, Ont., where he held the position of ombudsman for eight years.

He currently serves as vice-president for the Forum of Canadian Ombudsman.

"It is important that homeowners feel that Tarion is accessible," Mr. Bogach said in a prepared statement.

"Ian Darling and his team will be an impartial and independent resource for those with concerns about procedural irregularities or Tarion policies."
