The local SPCA has fired Pierre Barnoti, the former executive director who landed in controversy earlier this year for his fundraising practices and lavish pay.

Mr. Barnoti went on extended leave in March after coming under fire for management practices, his compensation and for raising funds for the local association under the name Canadian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Donors across Canada said they believed the Montreal SPCA was a national organization.

Mr. Barnoti was also criticized for racking up thousands in travel expenses for the cash-strapped organization.
