Supporters watch election results come in at the Ontario Progressive Conservative campaign headquarters in Niagara Falls, Ont.

The Progressive Conservatives wrested at least two seats from the Liberals among the 15 ridings that make up eastern Ontario -- but the NDP failed to break through here.

Tory Jim McDonell took the former Liberal seat of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry.

In Prince Edward-Hastings, Liberal cabinet minister Leona Dombrowsky was defeated by Tory Todd Smith.

Ottawa-area Liberal minister Bob Chiarelli, a former city mayor, beat back a challenge from Tory and journalist Randall Denley in a close race.

Reported tax problems did not prevent Randy Hillier from retaining Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington seat for the Tories.

The Tories appeared set to win at least seven seats in the region, with the Liberals on track to hold seven. The PCs were also leading in Northumberland-Quinte West.
