A Vancouver man convicted of murdering 11 people at a Nazi prison camp in Italy during the Second World War has been released on bail.

British Columbia Appeal Court judge William Esson granted the release for Michael Seifert after hearing arguments from his lawyer and the Crown.

Mr. Seifert - who is fighting extradition to Italy - has been in custody since last August. That was when B.C. Supreme Court Justice Selwyn Romilly ordered he be committed into custody pending a decision by the federal justice minister whether to surrender him to Italy to begin serving a life sentence.

The extradition judge found there was enough evidence to extradite Mr. Seifert on seven charges involving nine murders. The victims were both Jewish and Italian.
