Maria Manna, former Liberal candidate in the B.C. riding of Cowichan-Malahat-Langford in the 2015 federal election.

A Liberal candidate on Vancouver Island has resigned over a Facebook post questioning the origins of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington.

A media report says Maria Manna said in a Sept. 11, 2013, post that she knows the truth about who's responsible for the attacks on the United States and that love is the answer.

The candidate for the new riding of Cowichan-Malahat-Langford said Monday in a statement posted on her Facebook site that she fully supports Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.

She says the election is far too important to have her past opinions and comments detract from the goals of the party.

The party had no immediate comment.

Manna says she sincerely apologizes to people she has offended and that she will continue to devote herself to her music and humanitarian work.

She is the second Liberal candidate from British Columbia to quit this month. Joy Davies stepped down after Facebook posts about marijuana and cancer came to light.
