A former federal politician who had gone missing in Haiti was found alive, officials confirmed Thursday.
Former Liberal MP Serge Marcil was rescued and on his way to the United States, said Quebec Premier Jean Charest.
"There's good news," the premier told reporters when asked about Marcil.
"He was retrieved by a United Nations officer. He's apparently on his way to Miami."
Marcil's son, Olivier, works in the premier's office.
The premier said little is known about Marcil's condition, and that it's "very frustrating" trying to get any details out of Haiti.
He said details should become clearer after Marcil arrives in Miami.
Marcil had just arrived in Port-au-Prince on a business trip this week when disaster struck.
He was booked to stay at the Hotel Montana, the landmark hotel that collapsed in the earthquake.
Marcil was a Liberal member of Parliament from 2000 to 2004. He previously served briefly as a provincial labour minister in the cabinet of Daniel Johnson.
After his career in federal politics, he was a chief of staff to the province's Liberal House leader Jacques Dupuis and has most recently worked for an engineering firm.
