A Liberal candidate has defeated a Bloc Quebecois incumbent after a recount overturned election night results in a suburban Montreal riding.

The Bloc's Marcel Lussier thought he had been re-elected in Brossard-La Prairie riding by just 102 votes over Liberal candidate Alexandra Mendes.

But a recount by a Quebec Superior Court judge has found that Ms. Mendes defeated Mr. Lussier by 69 votes in the Oct. 14 federal election.

Mr. Lussier, an engineer and environmental specialist, had held the riding since 2006.

The new tally gives the Liberals 77 seats nationally and drops the Bloc to 49.

Several recounts were ordered in ridings across the country following last week's federal election.
