Public Safety Minister Vic Toews was rushed to hospital from Parliament Hill by ambulance on Monday morning but his medical condition does not appear to be serious.

Mike Patton, a spokesman for Mr. Toews, said in an e-mail that the minister has been battling a seasonal flu for the past number of weeks.

"As a precaution, he was taken to the hospital today for observation," Mr. Patton wrote. "We trust that you will respect his privacy in this matter."

Later in the day, Mr. Patton confirmed Mr. Toews had been admitted to hospital suffering from a case of the seasonal flu and said he would remain there overnight "for observation as a precaution."

Update: On Tuesday, Mr. Patton said the minister's condition was the result of atrial fibrillation, a common form of irregular heartbeat, which was corrected non-surgically.
