York Regional Police say a 22-year-old man has been charged with killing his 58-year-old mother in the region's first homicide of the year.

Police say the woman was found suffering from stab wounds Monday night in a Sideroad 17 residence in King Township.

The woman was rushed to the Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, where she succumbed to her injuries.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled for today for the victim, who has been identified as Hilda Roelink of King.

Police say Andrew Roelink of King Township was arrested at the scene.

He's charged with first-degree murder and appeared in a Newmarket court today.
